How to Make Substrate (Bucket Tek)

Ingredients

  • 4 quarts water (1 gallon)

  • 1 coco coir brick (650 g)

  • 2 quarts vermiculite

  • 1/2 cup gypsum

1. Prepare the Coir

  1. Bring 4 quarts of water to a boil.

  2. Place the 650 g coco coir brick into a clean bucket.

  3. Add 2 quarts of vermiculite.

  4. Add 1/2 cup of gypsum

  5. Pour the water in the bucket and allow it get all over the ingredients.

  6. The coir will expand.

2. Mix it up

  1. Use a drill with a mixing attachment (or mix thoroughly by hand once cooled) until the substrate is fully blended.

  2. Be sure to scrape and mix all the way down to the bottom of the bucket.

3. Check Field Capacity

  1. Allow the substrate to cool completely before testing.

  2. Grab a handful of substrate and squeeze firmly:

  3. Correct: Only a couple of droplets of water should come out.

  4. IF too wet: Water drips freely → Add more vermiculite.

IF too dry: Add more water (start with 1 quart), mix again, and retest.

4. Ready to Use

Once at proper field capacity, your substrate is finished and ready to be used for tubs.
